About the Sport - BJJ
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully overcome a bigger, stronger assailant by using leveraged and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds.
BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments gi and nogi and mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, and it is very important for self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred as rolling) and drilling play a major role in training. A premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through the BJJ belt ranking system.
What is the difference between gi and nogi?
In terms of grappling competition, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi competitors wear a gi. It allows more techniques than seen in MMA, including gi chokes, simple standing throws and a variety of grips for leverage. Nogi competitors wear a non-collar / lapel shirt or rashguard, lose the option of utilizing the gi to hold grips, to choke, and must find another way to perform standing throws, among other things.
